Washington D.C., July 26, 2017 – The Niskanen Center is honored to welcome Mike Godwin as a senior fellow. Long a mainstay in the technology community, Godwin has built a distinguished career fighting for online freedom.

“We are elated to have Mike join Niskanen’s technology policy team,” said Ryan Hagemann, the Niskanen Center’s director of technology policy. “Mike is a legend and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will be invaluable to our mission of promoting innovation and technological progress.”

Godwin was the first staff attorney and employee to join the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1990, and was involved in many First Amendment legal challenges throughout the early days of the Internet.

“I’m honored to join the stellar team at the Niskanen Center,” said Godwin. “I believe in Niskanen’s essential role as a pragmatic advocate for better government policy—a role driven by the Center’s commitment to liberty and to positive policy change.”

He has previously served as an attorney for the Center for Democracy and Technology, legal director for Public Knowledge, and general counsel for the Wikimedia Foundation. He is also the name behind the eponymously titled adage, Godwin’s Law.

The Niskanen Center is a Washington, D.C.-based libertarian think tank that works to change public policy through direct engagement in the policymaking process.
